More Details

Kaleidoscope Abelia is a compact, deciduous shrub that grows up to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide. It has a mounding, spreading habit and produces small, fragrant, white or pink flowers in late summer to early fall.

Growth rate: Moderate growth rate; growing 4-6 inches a year. Reaches 2-3 ft tall and 3-4 ft wide at maturity.

Pruning: The Kaleidoscope Abelia benefits from annual pruning to maintain its shape and size. Prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches, and trim back any branches that are growing out of bounds. You can also lightly trim back the tips of the branches to encourage bushier growth.

Fertilizing: Fertilize the Kaleidoscope Abelia in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates.

Winter protection: The Kaleidoscope Abelia is hardy to USDA zones 6-9, but in colder climates, it may benefit from winter protection. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub in late fall to insulate the roots and protect them from frost damage.

Companion plants: The Kaleidoscope Abelia looks stunning when planted alongside other shrubs and perennials with contrasting foliage and flowers. Some good companions include ornamental grasses, hydrangeas, and roses.

The Kaleidoscope Abelia can be planted in either a pot or directly in the ground. When planting in the ground, choose a spot that receives full sun to partial shade. The soil should be well-draining, moist, and rich in organic matter. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball and place the shrub in the hole, making sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Fill the hole with soil, tamp it down gently, and water thoroughly.

The Kaleidoscope Abelia prefers full sun to partial shade and requires regular watering, especially during the first year after planting. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather conditions, to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. In hot, dry weather, the shrub may benefit from additional watering. The Kaleidoscope Abelia is a hardy shrub that can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and soil conditions, making it easy to care for.
