More Details

The Saucer Magnolia, scientifically known as Magnolia x soulangeana, is a stunning deciduous tree celebrated for its large, early spring blossoms that range in color from pure white to deep pink and purple. This hybrid magnolia is a result of crossing Magnolia denudata with Magnolia liliiflora, creating a broad, rounded tree that serves as an exceptional specimen in landscapes. Its dramatic floral display is often considered the herald of spring, with the flowers appearing before the leaves, against the backdrop of bare branches. In addition to its captivating blooms, the Saucer Magnolia features dark green leaves that turn golden brown in fall, contributing to its year-round interest. Adaptable to a range of soil types, it's a favored choice for parks, gardens, and residential areas looking to make a bold statement.

Growth rate: Slow to moderate growth rate; mature height of 20-30 feet and width of 20-25 feet.

Pruning: Minimal pruning is required, mainly to remove any dead or damaged wood or to maintain shape. Prune after flowering to avoid cutting off next season's buds.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and flowering.

Mulching: Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and protect the root zone.

Choose a location with well-draining soil in full sun to partial shade. Dig a hole as deep and twice as wide as the root ball. Plant the tree, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Space adequately from structures and other plants to accommodate its mature spread.

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, it requires less frequent watering but appreciates consistent moisture, especially in dry conditions. Prefers full sun for optimal flowering but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates.
