More Details

Winter Gem Boxwood, scientifically known as Buxus microphylla var. japonica 'Winter Gem', is a versatile evergreen shrub that adds structure and elegance to any garden setting. Known for its vibrant green foliage that turns bronze in winter, this plant provides year-round visual interest. It's an ideal choice for gardeners looking to achieve a formal appearance or a natural, flowing look with minimal care requirements.

Growth rate: Moderate growth rate; reaches 4 to 6 feet tall and wide at maturity.

Pruning: Pruning should typically be performed in late winter to early spring, before new growth begins. Regular light trimming will maintain its shape and density, but avoid severe pruning as this can stress the plant.

Fertilization: Feed the Winter Gem Boxwood with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring and late summer. Fertilizing helps in enhancing the plant's vibrant green foliage and overall health.

Winter Protection: Mulch around the base of the plant before winter to protect the root system from extreme cold. If the plant is young or newly planted, consider wrapping it with burlap to shield it from harsh winds and snow.

Select a planting site that offers well-drained soil and receives ample sunlight. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring it is level with the surrounding soil, then backfill with soil and compost. Water deeply immediately after planting. For hedge planting, space each Winter Gem Boxwood about 2-3 feet apart to allow room for growth and optimal air circulation.

Winter Gem Boxwood appreciates a well-drained soil and moderate watering, particularly during dry spells. Water every 7-10 days in such conditions. While it's tolerant of partial sun, the plant thrives best when exposed to full sun for at least 4-6 hours daily.
