More Details

Stonecrop is a versatile plant that can grow in a wide range of USDA hardiness zones, depending on the specific species or cultivar. It is commonly found in zones 3 to 9, but it's always advisable to check the specific requirements of the particular Stonecrop variety you choose.

Growth rate: Reaches a mature height of 16-18 in. and 24 in. wide

Pruning: Stonecrop generally requires minimal pruning. However, if you notice any dead or damaged stems, you can trim them back to promote new growth. Some taller varieties may benefit from a light pruning in early spring to maintain a more compact shape.

Fertilization: Stonecrop is a relatively low-maintenance plant and does not require heavy fertilization. However, you can apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring if desired, following the package instructions.

Winter Protection: Most Stonecrop varieties are hardy and can withstand cold temperatures. However, in areas with severe winters, providing a layer of mulch around the base of the plants can offer some protection to the roots.

When planting Stonecrop, choose a location with well-draining soil and full to partial sun exposure. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball, and place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the base of the plant. Water thoroughly after planting to help the roots establish.

Stonecrop is known for its ability to tolerate drought conditions, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens. It prefers well-draining soil and requires watering only when the soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's best to err on the side of underwatering. Stonecrop thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade, making it adaptable to various light conditions.
