More Details

The Otto Luyken English Laurel, scientifically known as Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken', is a magnificent evergreen shrub that brings lush, deep green foliage to gardens and landscapes. Celebrated for its glossy leaves and fragrant white flower spikes, this plant provides a dense and attractive privacy screen or hedge. Given the right conditions, Otto Luyken thrives in numerous settings, making it a top pick for gardeners aiming to add a touch of timeless sophistication to their outdoor spaces.

Growth rate: Moderate growth rate, achieving a mature height of 3-5 feet and a width of 4-6 feet.

Pruning: Prune the Otto Luyken English Laurel in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. This helps maintain its shape and promotes a dense growth habit. Removing dead or diseased branches can be done at any time.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Ensure it's well-suited for evergreen shrubs.

Winter Protection: In colder parts of its growing zone, it may benefit from a layer of mulch around its base to protect the roots. If in a windy location, consider providing a windbreak during harsh winter conditions.

Dig a hole 2 times the width of the root ball, but no deeper than the height of the root ball. Mix native soil with a quality soil conditioner. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the existing soil. Level the root ball in the hole. Fill the hole with the amended soil, firming gently until the hole is filled. Do not cover the trunk of the plant with soil. Water deeply to settle the soil in, adding more in necessary. Mulch 2-3 inches around the base of the plant to help keep the roots cool and retain moisture. Be sure to keep the plant well watered until it is fully established.

This variety of English Laurel thrives in areas of full to partial sun. In terms of watering, it's essential to maintain consistently moist soil, especially during prolonged dry periods, ensuring deep waterings about once a week.
