  • The Japanese Plum Yew boasts lush, dark green needle-like leaves that provide year-round interest, making it a standout in gardens especially during winter months when many other plants are dormant.
  • One of its key features is its resistance to deer. This makes it especially valuable in areas where deer browsing can decimate other garden plants.
  • The plant produces plum-like fruits that, in addition to being visually intriguing, are also a source of interest for their unusual appearance in comparison to typical coniferous plants.
  • While technically a shrub, it can also be considered a small tree. With the right pruning and training,  the Japanese Plum Yew can be cultivated as a patio tree. This involves training a single main stem while removing side branches, thereby giving it a tree-like appearance. This form can be particularly attractive in pots or containers on patios, offering year-round foliage interest.

More Details

The Japanese Plum Yew, scientifically known as Cephalotaxus harringtonia, is a remarkable evergreen shrub renowned for its lush, dark green needle-like foliage. Native to Japan, this versatile plant can offer year-round interest in gardens and landscapes. Its unique, plum-like fruits and deer-resistant nature make it a preferred choice for gardeners and landscapers seeking both beauty and functionality in their green spaces.

Growth rate: Slow growth rate. Reaches mature height of 5-10 ft and width of 5-7 ft

Please note: Images on our website depict plants and trees at full maturity to showcase their expected grown characteristics. These images are illustrative examples only and do not represent the size of plants or trees upon delivery.

Pruning: Trim lightly in late winter to maintain shape.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring.

Winter Protection: In colder areas, protect with mulch around the base.

Choose a location with good drainage and partial to full shade. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball. Set the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with a mix of garden soil and compost, then water deeply. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and protect from temperature extremes.

Consistent watering is vital for the Japanese Plum Yew, especially during the establishment phase. Ensure the soil remains moderately moist, but avoid waterlogged conditions. While this plant is tolerant of various light conditions, it truly shines in areas of partial to full shade.
