Pruning: The Japanese Boxwood can be pruned to maintain its desired shape and size. It is best to prune in early spring before new growth emerges. Remove any dead, damaged, or overgrown branches. Light pruning throughout the year can help maintain a neat appearance, but avoid heavy pruning that may compromise the plant's natural form.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. Follow the package instructions for the recommended dosage. Additionally, incorporating organic matter, such as compost, into the soil during planting or as a top dressing in spring can enhance the plant's overall health.

Winter Protection: In zones 5-10, where the Japanese Boxwood thrives, it generally exhibits good winter hardiness. However, during extreme cold spells or in regions with harsh winters, it is beneficial to provide some protection. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub to insulate the roots and help retain soil moisture. Additionally, avoid late-season pruning, as it may stimulate new growth that is susceptible to winter damage.

Whether planting in a pot or in the ground, the Japanese Boxwood requires well-drained soil and partial to full sunlight to thrive. When planting in the ground, dig a hole that is slightly wider and equal in depth to the root ball. Gently place the shrub into the hole, making sure it is centered and upright. Backfill the hole with soil, firming it gently around the roots. Water thoroughly to settle the soil. If planting in a pot, choose a container with drainage holes and use a high-quality potting mix. Ensure the container is large enough to accommodate the root system and provides room for growth. Place the pot in a location with adequate sunlight and water the plant regularly, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

The Japanese Boxwood prefers well-drained soil and requires regular watering, particularly during dry periods. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Regarding sunlight, the Japanese Boxwood thrives in partial shade to full sun. Provide it with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and foliage density.
