More Details

The Leyland Cypress Tree, also known as Cupressus, is a popular evergreen tree known for its tall, columnar shape and fast growth rate. It can grow up to 60 feet tall and 15-25 feet wide at maturity, making it a great option for creating privacy screens or windbreaks. The tree has a beautiful dark green foliage that lasts all year round, and it is relatively low-maintenance, making it a popular choice for both commercial and residential landscapes.

Growth rate: Grows 4 ft per year in height and 2-3 ft in width. Reaches a mature height of 60–70 ft and a spread of 15–25 ft

Pruning: Only prune to remove dead or damaged branches, and do so in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.

Fertilization: Fertilize once in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer.

Winter Protection: In colder zones (5-7), protect young Leyland Cypress trees from frost and wind by wrapping them with burlap or other protective material.

Companion Plants: Leyland Cypress pairs well with other evergreen shrubs like boxwood, juniper, and holly.

When planting the Leyland Cypress Tree, it is important to choose a well-draining location that receives full sunlight. The tree can be planted in either a pot or in the ground outside, but it prefers a soil pH of 6.5 to 7.5. When planting, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as the root ball. Gently place the tree in the hole and backfill with soil, pressing down firmly to remove any air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly thereafter to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged.

The Leyland Cypress tree prefers full sunlight and moderate watering, especially during the first year after planting. It's important to water deeply and less frequently rather than frequently with shallow watering to encourage deep roots. Once established, the tree can tolerate periods of drought but it's important to provide regular watering during prolonged dry spells.
